Founded by Erich Schulz – Schulz-Automobile was a well-established tuning company in the eighties and nineties, best known for their Mercedes-Benz conversions, especially the two-door cabriolets and hatchbacks based on the 190 W201 series. Also known for BMW 635i cabrios, as well as 6×6 six-wheeler G-Wagens and Range Rover soft-tops to mention just a few.
Schulz revealed a 190 (W201) Cabriolet with a 3.8 litre V8 engine at the Geneve Salon in 1984 – F1 world champion Keke Rosberg was one of the famous owners.
In April 1985 Sport Auto magazine compared a Schulz modified and turbocharged W124 Saloon against other offerings from Brabus, Lorinser and MTS. The other three companies offered only body and chassis conversions for the brand new 124-series.
Although Schulz is today not as well known and relatively little information is available online, it was an important player in the eighties and early nineties. The W124 book by Alexander Storz – included in the car file – has three photos of Schulz cars. As a comparison against other tuning companies – AMG got four pics, Brabus two, Carlsson two and Lorinser three.
Very few tuning companies or coachbuilders in Germany have had manufacturer status with dedicated VIN prefix, other tuner-manufacturers for examples are RUF and Alpina. This 300 CE 24V Cabriolet is one of the last cars officially registered from new as “Schulz-Automobile” and given a Schulz VIN/chassis number when first registered in Germany.
Believed to be a unique a one-off, in excellent and always well looked after condition. You can google Schulz tuning and find pictures of W124 Cabriolet, but they are all of this same car, and it’s very likely that this was a one-off, only one made.
The conversion includes wide wheel arches extending the width by 6 centimetres, lowered sport suspension and 17-inch AMG rims.
