A 1950’s Hollywood star to be restored back to her former glory or ready to be enjoyed as a “glamour rat rod”?
The choice is yours…

First owner 1958-1993 Barbara Billingsley, best known as family Cleaver’s mom June in one of the most popular 50’s to 60’s family series’, “Leave it to Beaver”. In 1980 she was cast as the “jive lady” in the hit disaster parody Airplane! because of her image as the ideal all-american mother.

In 1958 Barbara’s friend Melva Hamilton and her husband Fenton were part of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer staff at Cinecittà Studios in Rome shooting the motion picture Ben Hur – the biggest movie production of all time. They were working in the cinematography department under Robert Surtees, an Oscar winner for his work for this and many other movies. An original letter to Robert (Bob) from his brother is included in the car’s huge document file. It was given to Melva Hamilton to assist with Barbara’s Mercedes.

The production took eight months – long enough to use the expat privilege of buying a car duty free for import when moving back to the US. The Hamiltons used this advantage for their friend Barbara as she wanted to have a Mercedes-Benz 220S Coupé. The order was placed through the official Mercedes importer in Italy, Messrs. M.Morescalchi in Rome.

Mrs Billingsley wanted her car in cream colour, but only a black car was available for quick delivery so she was resprayed later in California.

Barbara used the Mercedes very little from early 1970’s and passed her on to the next custodian in 1993.

The engine has recently been rebuilt, together with thorough check of all driving gear.  Finnish MOT/TÜV inspection in September 2017, road legal, running and driving great. No missing parts. Cosmetically in totally unrestored 1960’s condition.
Having spent all of her life in California until 2012 there is only very little surface rust.
